Description:
1. Present the main elements of Ruđer Bošković's scientific and philosophical work (in natural philosophy, metaphysics, epistemology, methodology and philosophy of science) as well as his achievements in other areas (technical expertise, diplomacy, poetry).
2. Correlate the main elements of Bošković's scientific and philosophical work with the respective scientific, philosophical, political, and cultural contexts.
3. Analyze the main philosophical concepts, attitudes and arguments used by Bošković.
4. Enable students to interpret and understand relevant Bošković's works.
5. Enable students to understand the main concepts and terms used by Bošković.
6. Enable students to evaluate Bošković's theories and arguments.

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. recognize the main elements of Ruđer Bošković's scientific and philosophical work (in natural philosophy, metaphysics, epistemology, methodology and philosophy of science),
2. correlate the main elements of Bošković's scientific and philosophical work with the respective scientific, philosophical, political, and cultural contexts,
3. understand the main concepts and terms used by Bošković.
4. enable students to evaluate Bošković's theories and arguments.

Course content:
I. Introduction
1. The work of Ruđer Bošković (1711-1787)
2. Bošković's education and intellectual development in the scientific, philosophical, social, and cultural contexts of his time
II. Bošković's natural philosophy and metaphysics
3. Theory of forces and the structure of matter
4. Theories of space, time, and motion
5. Explanation of the mind-body relation ("soul" and "matter")
6. Determinism and God's action
7. Colloquium
III. Bošković's epistemology, philosophy of science, and methodology
8. Perceptual realism: innate ideas, primary and secondary qualities, common-sense vs scientific realism
9. Anti-realism (instrumentalism) in the philosophy of science: unobservable entities, the status of theories, and the scientific progress (1736-1748)
10. Scientific realism in the philosophy of science: unobservable entities, the status of theories, and the scientific progress (1748-1785)
11. Theory of scientific method and scientific explanation: induction, hypothetico-deductive method, explanation as micro-reduction and as unification
IV. Bošković's achievements in other areas
12. Technical expertise and works; diplomatic and political activity; poetry
V. Bošković's reception and influence

Hrvatski studiji Sveučilišta u Zagrebu pokrenuti su i ustrojeni 16. studenoga 1992., isprva samo kao dvosemestralni Sveučilišni komparativni studij hrvatske filozofije i društva. Taj je program potom preoblikovan u program redovitog četverogodišnjeg studija.
