Description:
The purpose of this course is for the students to get acquainted with Roman comedy and its importance in the development of the Western civilisation. We shall discuss the beginnings of Roman comedy (and drama in general), its characteristics and conventions, types of humour, etc., while going through the most famous works and representative authors. The focus will be on Plautus and Terence, but we will also use the fragments preserved. The main themes will be presented through textual examples, that will help them learn about the methods of constructing the story, eliciting laughter etc., as well as the differences and similarities between Roman comedy and its Greek predecessors. Students are required to: attend classes, prepare the texts, and pass the exam after the semester is over.
