Description:
To teach students how to use independently the sources on philosophy and literature on French culture.
To expand the knowledge of the French past and present concerning the European cultural horizon.
To enable students to analyse independently current political, intellectual, and cultural phenomena in France and Europe.
To provide students with insight into the literature and other sources like rare and precious materials needed to form critical reasoning about philosophy and art.
To understand the basic concepts of European culture with special reference to its French component.
To acquire the knowledge about the French identity, tradition, culture, and the development of language as well as artistic creation.
To express personal opinion and attitude on various topics.
To evaluate phenomena and trends in culture in the European and world context.

Learning outcomes at the level of the programme to which the course contributes:
Mastering the basic categories of development of European philosophy and culture.
Gaining insight into the development of French philosophy and artistic heritage.
Understanding French cultural identity.
Interdisciplinary judgment of different scientific methodologies and philosophical views.
The knowledge of major philosophical trends and aesthetic theories about the nature of works of art.
Understanding the interdisciplinary nature of philosophy and its significance for culture. Also, to promote moral, social and cultural values.
Participation in philosophical and cultural debates.
The evaluation and critical analysis of philosophical and aesthetic sources of French culture.

Students will be able to:
- get an insight into the history and modernity of France from the perspective of European culture
- distinguish the French culture of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the period before and after the French Revolution
- understand the peculiarities of French cultural heritage in relation to other European traditions
- study the close ties between French and Croatian culture
- to get acquainted with the art of translating from French into Croatian and translating texts into French
- work with various French written and audio-visual media with the help of the internet
- get an overview of important historical figures and dates.

Course content:
1. Instructions on literature and an introduction to French culture
2. French philosophy, science and art in the European context
3. French culture in contact with Croatian culture through history and today
4. French in the group of Romance languages
5. The founding of the Sorbonne and the importance of the University of Paris for Europe
6. The significance and role of the French kingdom in European history
7. The French Revolution and its consequences
8. The development of the French Republic, democracy and the media in the past and present
9. The philosophy of life, personalism, humanism, existentialism and modernism (Bergson, Maritain, Sartre, Camus, Derrida, Barthes, Foucault, Finkelkraut, Houellebecq)
10. French literature: Balzac, Peguy, Saint Exupery, Bernanos, Claudel, Grosjean, Michon, Bobin.
11. The highlights of recent French cinema: Bunuel, Melville, Truffaut, Sautet, Bresson.
12. Significant dates in French history
13. Selected French greats in the Pantheon
14. Key figures of French culture
15. French art in music, painting and architecture

Hrvatski studiji Sveučilišta u Zagrebu pokrenuti su i ustrojeni 16. studenoga 1992., isprva samo kao dvosemestralni Sveučilišni komparativni studij hrvatske filozofije i društva. Taj je program potom preoblikovan u program redovitog četverogodišnjeg studija.
